Bumper entries at Burwarton Show on Thursday 6 August saw the Hereford breed take the Interbreed Team of Four Championship, plus a second Reserve Interbreed Championship win in two weeks for Coley 1 Malan 697 from Miss A Jackson-Carr, Sheffield.

What a summer it has been for young breeder Miss A Jackson-Carr, this time taking both the Breed Championship and Reserve Interbreed Championship with her first-calved heifer Malan and February-born bull calf at foot JC 1 Del Boy. This will be Coley 1 Malan’s fourth Breed Championship and sixth Female Championship this summer, a fantastic achievement. Malan is an August 2023-born heifer and is sired by Romany 1 Distiller. Her calf, JC 1 Del Boy, is sired by Coley 1 Vincent, joint HCS Bull of the Year in 2023.

Coley 1 Malan 697 later teamed up with Dendor 1 Cruzcampo from DE, ED & AL Jones and Bosbury 1 Carling and Bosbury 1 Laurel C218 from Mrs S Hawkins to win the Interbreed Team of Four competition.
Taking the Reserve Breed Championship was Dendor 1 Cruzcampo exhibited by DE, ED & AL Jones, Caersws. A March 2025-born bull sired by the herd’s stock bull Solpoll 1 Vanquish, Cruzcampo’s dam is Dendor 1 Echo 36th, a Bakgard 1 Keno daughter. Like Coley 1 Malan, Cruzcampo has also had a successful summer, winning many championships including the Reserve Native Junior Interbreed Championship at The Royal Three Counties Show, the Reserve Breed Champion, Junior Native Interbreed Champion Bull, Elite Junior Bull at the Royal Welsh Show and Overall Breed Champion at The Royal Lancashire Show.
It was a battle between the beers for the Male Championship title, with Cruzcampo hitting the spot and Bosbury 1 Carling from Mrs S Hawkins, Ledbury, taking the Reserve Male Championship. Bosbury 1 Carling is a February 2025-born bull sired by Porton House 1 Tristar, a Dendor 1 Nairobi son, and out of Bosa 1 Laurel 980, a Bosa 1 Jeremiah daughter. Carling won the class for bulls born on or after 1 July 2024 and before 1 March 2025, beating four other entries and was also recently awarded the first prize for yearling bull in the Hereford Cattle Breeders Association Herd Competition.
Coming from the same stable was the Reserve Female Champion, Bosbury 1 Laurel C218 also from Mrs S Hawkins. Laurel C218 is a February 2025-born heifer sired by Grifford 1 Try, a Fabb 1 Northern Star son, and her dam is Bosbury 1 Laurel V68, a Barwise 1 Nabucco daughter.
Winning the class for bulls born before 1 July 2024 was Bounds 1 Brooklyn, exhibited by H Weston & Sons Ltd. Brooklyn is a May 2024 born bull sired by Sky High 1 Rock-the-Boat and out of Bounds 1 Seraphina, a Blakesley 1 Murphy Daughter.
First prize in the younger end of the split ‘Heifer born before 1 July 2025’ class went to JC 1 Marrigold 2nd, bred and exhibited by Mr L Jackson Carr. Marrigold, a March 2025-born heifer, is sired by Coley 1 Vincent and out of Coley 1 Marrigold 592, a Venture 70X Heart-Index 273U daughter.
Dendor 1 Holly 16th took the first prize in the ‘Heifer born after 1st July 2025’ class, bred and exhibited by DE, ED & AL Jones. Holly is a September 2025-born heifer sired by Pepperstock 1 Trigger and out of Dendor 1 Holly 12th, a Dendor 1 Nairobi daughter who was placed 2nd at the National Poll Show.
The champion pair of Herefords went to Greg and Ruth Watkins with their two homebred heifers, Hollybush 1 Eva 6th and Hollybush 1 Keepsake 5th.
Mr S Shaw wins Champion Young Handler
Congratulations to all the young Hereford breeders that took part in the Young Handlers’ Section. Young Hereford breeder Mr S Shaw took the Overall Champion Young Handler with Miss A Jackson-Carr taking the Reserve Champion Young Handler.
Well done to Judge Mr Philip Vincent on a great day’s judging, and congratulations to all the exhibitors on bringing forward an impressive 34 entries on the day.
