DNA sampling and testing is a fundamental part of modern-day pedigree cattle breeding.

The purpose is two fold; firstly for sire or parentage verification, to validate the lineage of an animal’s pedigree and secondly to detect specific genetic defects within a breed to aid breeding decisions.

Successful sampling

Time and money can be saved by taking a good quality sample for parentage verification and genetic defects testing.

Tissue sampling

Although the society’s laboratory continues to accept hair samples, ear tissue samples have a higher success rate.

DNA testing policy

Globally there are 400 recognised genetic defects in beef cattle. Hereford Cattle Society tests for four.
