Bringing home prestigious wins for the Hereford breed at the Royal Norfolk Show on 24 & 25 June was the December 2024-born bull Coley 1 Centurion, bred and exhibited by Miss Heather Whittaker, Halifax. Having first risen to the top of the Hereford section under breed judge Mrs Diane Harrison, Northumberland, Centurion went on to win both the native and overall titles in the Beef Supreme Championship judged by Mr John Elliott Sr., Berwickshire.

This success marked the second set of interbreed honours for Coley 1 Centurion so far this year and was not only hotly contested due to high temperatures at the show, but also the number and quality forward across several breeds, with national shows held at the event having brought together plenty of serious competition. Breed class judge Mrs Diane Harrison of Moralee Herefords, Stocksfield, summarised her choice for the breed championship by saying of the bull: “when he came into the ring he walked well, is well put together and very correct with a lovely rear end, good on the plates with a lovely colour and head. It was a tough decision for champion, but at the end of the day in the final seconds before the tap, he stood there like a king.”

The reserve breed championship went to the winner of a particularly strong class of cows, the 2020-born Pepperstock 1 Molly V715 from Jim Speirs, Luton, selected by the judge for the correctness through her top line and for her calf at foot, which just gave her the advantage at the top of the cow class, which Diane described as being tough to judge with so many outstanding entries down the line. The entirely homebred Molly V715 is sired by Pepperstock 1 Rebellious EX95 and out of Pepperstock 1 Molly S511 and was shown with her 9-month-old heifer calf Pepperstock 1 Molly D1200 at foot, the calf also picking up a second prize in her own right in the youngest heifer class.

Picking up a string of prizes were local breeders PRJ & LR Vincent, Diss, whose homebred heifer Pulham 1 Tiara 14th was pulled forward as both the junior champion and reserve female champion, having won a hugely competitive class of ten heifers all born between January and March 2025. This heifer – sired by Solitude 1 Vantastic EX95 and out of Pulham Tiara 6th EX93 – also picked up the Norfolk Special for the best animal bred and exhibited by a breeder within the county of Norfolk.

The reserve junior and reserve male championships went to the Benacre Company’s Benacre 3 Cassius Clay, a March 2025-born son of Coley 1 Ariel and out of Ashdale 3 Queen 799, this result adding to a successful show season so far for this young bull.

Following the judging, the Midlands and East Anglia Hereford Breeders’ Association hosted a reception on their stand featuring drinks sponsored by the Vincent family, and Hereford beef rolls supplied by Tony Perkins Butchers based in Attleborough, whose beef is sourced direct from MEAHBA members Clive and Paula Bidmead of Rockland Herefords near Norwich. Thanks go to HCS General Manager Seth Wareing, HCS President Caroline Davies, MEAHBA member Julie Reid, and MEAHBA Secretary Peter Moyes for operating the breed stand across the two days of the show, and to the many members who attended and brought forward a superb lineup of cattle.

At the Royal Cheshire County Show held at Knutsford on Tuesday 16 & Wednesday 17 June, it was the 2021-born cow Hallwood 1 Lady Jewel from Messrs R & RI Shaw, Ledsham, which topped the Hereford section under judge Mr D J Deaville, Derbyshire, before going on to be tapped forward as the Reserve Native Interbreed Champion, as well as the Reserve Exhibitor-bred Interbreed Champion as judged by Ms M Cormack, Shropshire.

Hallwood 1 Lady Jewel, a homebred offering from the Shaw’s long-established herd, is a daughter of the prolific AI sire Fabb 1 Northern Star and was shown with her November 2025-born bull calf Hallwood 1 Duke-of-Destiny at foot, sired by Hallwood 1 Allspice.

The reserve breed champion in the Hereford section was the senior heifer class winner Mairwen 1 Oyster Lass 4th from Mr Nigel Owens, Llanelli. Sired by Pepperstock 1 Watson and out of Rodbaston Oyster Lass 16th (X), this heifer was born in August 2024 and was also awarded the reserve female championship in the Hereford section.

In the bull standings, it was the April 2024-born Wythen 1 Blaze, bred and exhibited by Allen Massey of Wythenshawe Community Farm, Manchester, which rose to the top of the male championship just ahead of Simon Jones & Annika Harding’s junior bull Sandlow 1 Cajun Thunder, born in February 2025. The junior champion also came from the Wythen herd, the maiden heifer class winner Wythen 1 Chaos, born in April 2024 and sired by Maxstoke 1 Archie.

New breeders SJ & H Smith, Welshpool, saw success in the exhibitor-owned pairs class with two recent sale purchases: Pulham 1 Lucy 7th secured at the Designer Genes auction in December 2025, and Pepperstock 1 Blossom C1144 from the HCS Spring Show & Sale in February 2026.

Coley 1 Malan 697 reigned supreme with a fantastic showcase of quality Hereford cattle forward, and what a day it was for young Hereford breeder Miss Abbie Jackson-Carr with her calved heifer Coley 1 Malan 697 taking home the overall Breed Championship. Coley 1 Malan 697 is an August 2023-born, first-calved heifer with her February born bull calf JC 1 Del Boy at foot. Malan is sired by Romany 1 Distiller and out of an imported Danish cow, Kammerherre Malan. Malan and Del Boy impressed the judge Miss Non Thorne, Pembrokeshire, with Non commenting: “my champion is an incredibly sweet, very delicate heifer. She’s very light on her feet and shone throughout the day. I was drawn to her straight away when she was up against some real power in the cow and calf class.”

Taking the Reserve Breed Championship and overall Junior Championship was Coley 1 Centurion, exhibited by Miss H Whittaker. A December 2024-born Gouldingpoll 1 Goldspice embryo out of Gouldingpoll 1 Duchess 916 who was Female Champion herself at the Royal Highland Show in 2022. Centurions full brother was overall Champion and reached the top price at the Hereford Society Spring Show and Sale at Shrewsbury in April. Centurion has already had a Breed Championship title under his belt this year winning the overall Championship and Native Interbreed Championship at Shropshire County Show last month.

Taking the Reserve Male Championship and Reserve Junior Male was Normanton 1 Charlie Boy, exhibited by Mr J Hodge, Berwick-upon-Tweed. A September 2024-born bull sired by Cleland 1 Nelson, a Moeskaer Keno son, and out of Normanton 1 Griffola 10th, a Romany 1 Distiller daughter. Charlie Boy was bought for 7,000gns at the Shrewsbury Show and Sale in February and was Male Champion at Agri Expo and overall Champion at Shrewsbury Calf Show 2025.

Moralee 1 Pippa TE401 took the Reserve Female Championship along with Reserve Junior Champion and Junior Female Champion, bred and exhibited by T & D Harrison. Sired by Dendor 1 Tecwyn and her dam Moralee 1 Pippa RK281, a Moralee 1 Rebel Kicks daughter with Rebel Kicks taking the Overall Championship at the Royal Highland Show in 2021 along with being Champion of Europe. Moralee 1 Pippa TE401 at 3 months of age with her dam took the overall Breed Championship at the Highland Show in 2025. Her granddam Coley 1 Pippa 356 took the overall Breed Championship at the Royal Highland in 2017.

Winning the pairs class was T & D Harrison with the Reserve Female Champion Moralee 1 Pippa TE401 and Moralee 1 Ishbel PR396, a January 2025 born heifer sired by Moralee 1 RHS Prince KR R8.

Bringing home the Royal Three Counties Traditional Hereford breed championship for the very first time was Dorset-based breeder Mr Peter Davies, Weymouth, whose homebred 2-year-old bull South Buckland Major took the top spot under judge Mr Keith Siddorn, Chester, on Friday 12 June. Born in February 2024 and praised on the day by the judge for having excellent locomotion and body traits, Major’s pedigree features a variety of well-known animals of the past, being sired by the 1991-born AI sire Llandinabo Pop and out of homebred cow South Buckland Hope, an AI daughter of the well-regarded 1962 MMB bull Ffostill Brigadier. 

Standing in reserve was another February 2024-born animal, heifer Poolhullock Amorous 9th bred and exhibited by local breeder Mr Jeremy Helme, Hereford. Sired by Baytal Jeremy, this heifer impressed judge Mr Keith Siddorn with her functionality and overall appearance, with Keith commenting that she would be “the type of animal I’d very much like to put in my herd”.  

The reserve female championship was awarded to junior heifer class winner Albany Dowager 48th from Mr Leslie Cook, Cambridge. Sired by the prolific Boresisle Richmond EX94, this heifer is one of fewer than 50 remaining pedigree registered females of the original Dowager female family, as recorded in the most recent THBC census. The reserve male champion was another from the same breeder – Albany Odyssey born in August 2024 – also sired by Boresisle Richmond EX94 and out of Albany Oyster Girl 19th VG89. 

Success also continued at the show for the South Buckland herd on Sunday 14 June, when Mr Peter Davies’ South Buckland Major and South Buckland Hope were tapped forward as the Reserve Interbreed Pair in the RBST Watchlist Championship under judge Mr Bernard Llewellyn, Llandeilo. 

Congratulations are given to all of the exhibitors on bringing out a bumper entry for this year’s show, which judge Mr Keith Siddorn described as being “a great honour and privilege to have been asked [to judge], and I thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience. All of the cattle present were of great quality and were so very well presented; what a superb sight they were in the ring”. You can see more of Mr Siddorn’s post-judging comments in the video here.

It was some day for Young Hereford Breeder Nathaniel Shaw, taking the top spot at the NIHBA National Show with his homebred heifer Sessiagh 1 Billie Ray. Billie Ray started by winning the second class of the day, ‘Heifer born on or after 01/01/2024 and on or before 30/06/2024’, before being tapped out as Female Champion and then Overall Supreme Champion. Sessiagh 1 Billie Ray is a March 2024-born heifer, sired by Dendor 1 Kohinoor and out of Graceland 1 Nicola, a Fisher 1 Jubilee daughter. Billie Ray caught the eye of the judge, Mrs Caroline Davies, Herefordshire with Caroline commenting that “my champion heifer was oozing style and power and is an excellent example of the breed.”

Taking the Reserve Breed Championship was rising two-year-old bull Lusky 1 Cornelius, exhibited by Mr John Gill. Cornelius is a July 2024-born bull sired by Lusky 1 Van Dyke, a Peartree 1 Gordon son. Lusky 1 Cornelius won the ‘Bull born on or after 1st January 2024 and before 31st December 2024’ class, beating three other entries, before being tapped out as Male Champion and Reserve Breed Champion. Lusky 1 Cornelius is no stranger to the show ring this summer having won his class at both the 2026 Lurgan and Balmoral Shows.

Standing Reserve Male Champion to Cornelius and picking up the Junior Male Championship was the 2026 Balmoral Show Overall Junior Champion Solpoll 1 Cherokee, exhibited by Mr Donald Beatty. Cherokee is a 16-month-old Rempstone 1 Worldwide son which Donald purchased privately from the McMordie family earlier in the year. Cherokee’s dam is Shancorpoll 1 Oll1 Uakea, a Fabb 1 Northern Star daughter. Cherokee won the ‘Bull born on or after 01/01/2025 and on or before 31/08/2025’ class, beating four other entries.

Solpoll 1 Starlet D4 exhibited by J & W McMordie took the Reserve Female Championship, Junior Female Championship, Overall Junior Championship and Overall Calf Champion after winning the ‘Heifer born on or after 01/01/2025 and on or before 31/08/2025’ class. Starlet D4, a September 2025-born heifer is sired by the renowned Panmure 1 Henry and out of Solpoll 1 Starlet G13, a Solpoll 1 Dynamite daughter. Starlet D4 is a full sister to Solpoll 1 Nobility who sold to Rempstone and Solpoll 1 Starlet L3 who is the dam to Solpoll 1 Vanquish.

Taking the Reserve Female Junior Champion was Sommerville 1 Clementine exhibited by Heather King. An April born 2025, Fabb 1 Northern Star heifer out of Sommerville 1 Willow, a Gouldingpoll 1 Stockman daughter.

Reserve Calf Champion and Reserve Junior Male Champion was awarded to Richmount 1 Del Boy, a December 2025 Fisher 1 Jaguar son out of Richmount 1 Poppy, a Grousehallpoll 1 Premier daughter.

Winning the Progeny Pair, best pair by the same dam or sire, went to Ryan and Russell Kelly, with the boys also winning the best Group of Three.

The Champion Young Handler was Keziah Shaw and the Reserve went to Oscar Moore.

A total of 67 entries were forward, and the Herefords won the best display of cattle in the Grand Parade. Thanks to Caroline Davies for making the trip across the water and doing a fantastic job judging.

The wind and rain may have stopped play on day three of the Royal Cornwall Show, however the weather certainly didn’t stop our Hereford exhibitors putting on a fantastic display of both horned and polled Hereford cattle for our judge Mr Jimmy Speirs, Bedfordshire.

 

It was Midford 1 Crackerjack exhibited by Mr Will Awan that claimed the top spot on the day being crowned Overall Breed Champion. Crackerjack took 1st place in the second bull class of the day, Bulls born on or between 1st August 2024 and 31stDecember 2024, before being tapped out as Male Champion and then going all the way to win the Overall Breed Championship title. Born in October 2024, Crackerjack is sired by Kinglee 1 The New One, a Cleland 1 Nelson son and out of Gouldingpoll 1 Ravette 738, (Best cow In the South West Herd Competition 2023), who bred Midford 1 Ravette1st, the Supreme Champion at the Shrewsbury Calf Show in 2023, and Female Champion at Agri Expo the same year. Crackerjack is no stranger to the show winning having previously lifted the Interbreed Senior Calf Championship at Agrifest Southwest in 2025 and also winning Junior Male Champion and Reserve Male Champion at the National Show at Moreton in Marsh 2025.

Standing Reserve Breed Champion and taking the Overall Female Championship was Allwood 1 Miss, exhibited by FW Wood and Sons. Miss is a January 2024 born heifer sired by Dendor 1 Triple H, a Dendor 1 Nairobi son and out of a bought in female, Pepperstock 1 Miss T609 whose sired by the 2016 bull of the year and multiple award winning bull Normanton 1 Laertes. Allwood 1 Miss won the Heifer born in 2024 class beating last weeks Overall Breed Champion at Devon and Bath & West Show, Lanscombe 1 Foxglove.

Lanscombe 1 Foxglove exhibited by Messrs R A & V A Mitchell followed Allwood 1 Miss all the way claiming the Reserve Female Championship title. Foxglove is a January 2024 born heifer sired by Vexour 1 Phantom, a Solpoll 1 Landmark son who is breeding exceptionally well in the Lanscombe herd helping them achieve the best herd in the 2025 South West Herd competition and best Stockbull. The dam is Lanscombe 1 Winkie, a Brangwyn 1 Emperor daughter. Lanscombe 1 Foxglove has had an exceptional show career this year winning two Breed Championships already.

Coming from the same stable was the Reserve Male Champion, Lanscombe 1 Gilbert, a February 2025 born bull. Sired again by Vexour 1 Phantom and this time out of lanscombe 1 Toffee, another Brangwyn 1 Emperor daughter. Gilbert won the Bull born in 2025 class, with F J, R P & J M Hawkes two horned bulls following close behind.

Messrs R A & V A Mitchell won the Champion Group Of Three class with Lanscombe 1 Foxglove, Lanscombe 1 Gracie and Lanscombe 1 Gilbert.

Our Breed Manager Seth Wareing caught up with the judge Mr Jimmy Speirs after the judging where Jimmy commented saying ‘There was a lot of good quality Herefords forward, with strong, powerful cattle, showing great style.’ Jimmy commented saying that he likes a darker coloured Hereford and was also looking for cattle that could move well. The Cattle that came out in the top spot are cattle that Jimmy would like to see come home with him. Watch the video here

It was a day to remember for owner and breeder Messrs SC & GL Hartwright with their homebred, five-year-old cow Spartan 1 Victoria’s Secret and her April-born bull calf Spartan 1 Double-Or-Nothing winning the Overall Supreme Championship under judge Mr Jimmy McMillan. Rearing her fifth calf, Victoria’s Secret is no stranger to the show ring having recently been tapped out as Female Champion and Reserve Breed Champion at Northumberland County Show and Overall Breed Champion at the 2024 Royal Highland Show. Victoria’s Secret is a Solpoll 1 Perfection daughter, and her dam Cleland 1 Glissade 26th is a Cleland 1 Luther daughter. The calf Spartan 1 Double-Or-Nothing is a Spartan 1 Billy-the-Kid son, again with Solpoll 1 Perfection in the back pedigree.

Dendor 1 Cruzcampo from DE, ED & AL Jones enjoyed Interbreed success at the show winning Reserve Native Junior Interbreed Champion, also taking the Reserve Breed Champion title and Junior Male Champion. Cruzcampo is a March 2025-born bull sired by Solpoll 1 Vanquish and out of Dendor 1 Echo 36th, a Bakgard 1 Keno daughter which was Reserve Female Champion at Shrewsbury Calf Show 2019. Again, no stranger to the show ring, Cruzcampo was crowned Junior Male Champion at Shrewsbury Calf Show in 2025 and more recently Reserve Male Champion at Shropshire County Show last month.

Taking the Overall Reserve Male Championship and Senior Male Championship was Dendor 1 Alabama from F J Wood and Sons. Alabama is sired by Dendor 1 Vivian, a Gouldingpoll 1 Moonshine son and out of Dendor 1 Jennefer 17th, a Solpoll 1 Gilbert daughter. Alabama was reserve Polled Bull of the Year in 2025 and has had a successful show career, picking up Senior Male Champion at the National held at Moreton in 2025 and more recently Male Champion at Devon County Show this year.

Havenfield 1 Bailiff scooped up the Reserve Senior Male title and won first prize in the bull born on or between 1st January 2024 and 31st August 2024 class. Exhibited by EL Lewis and Son, Bailiff is a March 2024-born bull sired by Solpoll 1 Lawman, champion at Tullamore show in 2016 and 2017, a Panmure 1 Henry son. Bailiff’s dam is Haven Dowager 184th, a horned cow winning second prize in the HCBA Herd Competition and also the dam of Haven Brigadier, Champion at Kington Show in 2025. Bailiff is in the top 1% of the breed for 200, 400 and 600 day growth, along with Hereford Terminal Index.

Reserve Junior Male Champion went to Mr William Awan with Midford 1 Crackerjack, last week’s Royal Cornwall Show Overall Breed Champion. Pepperstock 1 Molly V715 took the Reserve Senior Female Championship with her September-born heifer calf at foot, Pepperstock 1 Molly D1200. Exhibited by Mr Jim Speirs, Molly V715 is a Pepperstock 1 Rebellious daughter sired by Normanton 1 Laertes. Her dam Pepperstock 1 Molly S511 is a Pepperstock 1 Kingsley daughter. Molly V715 is a December 2020-born cow rearing her third heifer calf and due to calve again in the autumn. Molly D1200 won a championship in her own right, being awarded Reserve Junior Champion. Molly D1200 is sired by Solpoll 1 Spike, a Moeskaer Upgrade son.

Junior Female Champion was won by Mrs Sarah Hawkins with Bosbury 1 Laurel C218. A February 2025 born heifer and sired by Grifford 1 Try, a Fabb 1 Northern Star son, and out of Bosbury 1 Laurel V68 BN, a Barwise 1 Nabucco daughter.

Winning the class for the best exhibitor-bred pair of animals and going on to win Reserve Native pair of animals in the Interbreed was F J Wood and Son with their two February 2025-born heifers, Allwood 1 Greta 2nd and Allwood 1 Greta 3rd. Both heifers are sired by River-Dale 1 Whiz Kid.

Herefords take native inter-breed and overall inter-breed pair titles at Shropshire County Show

Amongst a highly competitive line-up of breed champions at West Mid Showground on Saturday 23 May, it was the Hereford bull Coley 1 Centurion from Miss Heather Whittaker, Halifax, which took home the coveted native inter-breed and reserve overall inter-breed titles, before teaming up with JC Herefords’ calved heifer Coley 1 Malan 697 to claim the overall inter-breed pairs championship.

Having been awarded the breed championship earlier in the day, Coley 1 Centurion was described by judge Maddie Clarke, Clwyd, as having “great character, width and power”, and being “a bull that any pedigree breeder should be snapping up”. Born by embryo transfer in December 2024, Centurion is a son of Gouldingpoll 1 Gold Spice, and out of Gouldingpoll 1 Duchess 916, purchased as a heifer by Miss Whittaker from the Goulding Opportunity Sale in 2019 and awarded a prestigious female championship at the Royal Highland Show in 2022. This mating has now proved doubly successful for the Coley herd, with a full brother to this bull having achieved the championship and top price at the recent Hereford Cattle Society Sale in April.

The reserve breed championship went to the August-2023-born heifer Coley 1 Malan 697 shown with her February-born first calf JC 1 Del Boy at foot, the outfit exhibited by young Hereford breeder Miss Abbie JC, Sheffield. Purchased by JC Herefords in 2024 and described  by judge Maddie Clarke as “an impressive calved heifer with an exceptional bag of milk, feminine but still with the power and width that I like to see”, Malan 697 is sired by Romany 1 Distiller and out of the Danish import Kammerherre Malan.

Standing as reserve male champion was the March-2025-born Dendor 1 Cruzcampo, marking yet another success for progeny of the Jones family’s prominent stock sire Solpoll 1 Vanquish since his purchase from breeders J & W McMordie, Co Down, in 2022. Cruzcampo is out of Dendor 1 Echo 36^th EX90, a Danish-sired cow by Bakgard 1 Keno, herself a previous reserve female champion of the National Calf Show in 2018.

The reserve female championship went to the winner of the youngest heifer class of the day, the May 2025-born Coley 1 Lilac 758, another from Miss Heather Whittaker. Sired by the Cogent Signature Beef sire Gouldingpoll 1 Duncan, Coley 1 Lilac 758 is out of Dendor 1 Lilac Wine 29^th, another Bakgard 1 Keno daughter bred by DE, ED & AL Jones and purchased by Miss Whittaker in 2018.

Commenting on her day of judging, Maddie Clarke said: “It was a great honour to be asked to judge the Hereford section at Shropshire County Show. A smaller number of Herefords forward, but quality cattle on display.”

In the Traditional Hereford section, it was the 2019-born cow Boresisle Regina 87^th from Mrs Sarah Cowle, Aylesbury, which took the top spot under judge Mr Tony Bradstock, Tarrington. Shown with her March-born heifer calf Eutierria Regina 2^nd at foot by previous Shropshire County Show breed champion Carpenters Brigadier EX90, Boresisle Regina 87^th VG86 is sired by Lower Eaton Diamond, a son of the 1963-born MMB bull Monkland Dorando.

Standing as reserve breed champion and taking home the John Featherstone Trophy for best yearling in the Traditional Hereford classes was the maiden heifer Albany Dowager 48^th from Mr Leslie Cook, Cambridge. Born in January 2025, this heifer is by the prolific stock sire Boresisle Richmond EX94 and out of Albany Dowager 46^th GP83.

What was notable throughout the day was the  number of young Hereford breeders taking charge of the cattle during every class, as well as showing their expertise in the young handlers’ competition, with Hereford handlers Ashlee H, Summer H, and Nathaniel J making up three of the four finalists and winning both champion young handler (Ashlee H) and reserve (Summer H). The level of professionalism and standard of production of the cattle forward at the show was a testament to these young Hereford handlers’ hard work, the strength of the Hereford Youth programme, and to the world-famous docility of Hereford cattle.

Trade to 5,200gns at Carlisle

Auckvale 1 Bradley 2363B from W & R Kemp & Sons, Bishop Auckland, led the Hereford entry at Harrison and Hetherington’s Pedigree Native Beef Day Spring Show & Sale at Borderway Mart, Carlisle, on Friday 22 May, selling at 5,200gns. Born in March 2024, this March-born bull is by the Canadian-imported Auckvale 1 Vice Chancellor 2031 (AI ET), a son of NJW 73S W18 Downhome 21Z, and out of Auckvale 1 Janet 1853S, a Dendor 1 Muttley daughter. A long, dark bull with exceptional EBVs for calving ease and milk, Bradley has run outside for most of his life. His paternal half-brother, Auckvale 1 Achiever 2297A, topped this same sale last year at 7,000gns, selling to Messrs Gray, Alnwick.

Next in the bull trade at 4,500gns was Fellowhills 1 Cheers from J Hodge, Berwick-upon-Tweed. This November-2024-born bull is by Studdolph 1 Goldfinger; a Vexour 1 Palmer son and out of Fisher 1 Cheerful N443, tracing back to the Fisher Cheerful line through Fisher 1 Jaguar J347. Fellowhills 1 Cheers comes from a 4-star rated herd for completeness of performance recording.

Also from J Hodge and making 3,500gns was Fellowhills 1 Chief, a wide and easy-fleshed son of Moralee 1 Rebel Kicks KS R12 out of the successfully shown Shraden 1 Alice P809. Born in August 2024, this bull carries SMH King Size 87K (Imp DNK) on the sire’s side.

From the Vexour herd of J Boomaars, Woldingham, Surrey, came two September 2024-born stable mates by Vexour 1 Warren, both from a 4-star rated herd for performance recording. Vexour 1 Chief sold at 3,000gns, with his dam Vexour 1 Ramona going back to Romany 1 Plum D1 J23. His herd-mate Vexour 1 Chance followed at 2,500gns, out of Vexour 1 Sarah and tracing to Kinglee 1 Hero.

In the female section, the top call was made at 2,500gns for Kingshaugh 1 Cinder from TW Hutchinson, Forest-in-Teesdale, Co Durham. The March 2025-born heifer is by the Australian-imported Kanimbla Power Quest Q006, a son of NJW 79Z Z311 Endure 173D (ET), and out of Kingshaugh 1 Tilly – a Gouldingpoll 1 Gold Spice (Imp IRL) daughter from the Kingshaugh 1 Opel line.

With a record-breaking 82 entries at this year’s Balmoral Show, and Herefords dominating the cattle sections across all breeds, it was a memorable day for brothers Ryan and Russell Kelly, first-time Hereford exhibitors at the show, who took home the top honours with Somerville 1 Winnie.

Somerville 1 Winnie (P) AI ET, a September 2022-born cow with her February 2026-born bull calf at-foot, started the day by winning the strong cow and calf class with eight entries forward. She was tapped out as female champion later in the day before being crowned overall breed champion, with judge Anselm Fitzgerald commenting on how “flashy and easy fleshing” she is, and describing her as “a stand-out cow” that will bring much success for the Kelly family.

Sired by the renowned Normanton 1 Laertes, a bull with multiple interbreed titles to his name including the Royal Highland and Royal Welsh Shows, and out of Solpoll 1 Fashion T18, a daughter of Rempstone 1 Fashion E430 who won the junior female championship title at Balmoral in 2017 and was purchased from the Designer Genes sale by the McMordie family in 2016, Winnie has a strong pedigree behind her. She enjoyed multiple show successes as a two-year-old heifer across Northern Ireland in 2024, so is no stranger to the show ring.

Standing reserve to Winnie was overall male champion Carrowboy 1 Perfect, exhibited by MH Farms Ltd. Born in November 2022, “Perfect” is sired by Fabb 1 Northern Star, who is siring many champions and top AI sires within the breed, and his dam Woodviewpoll 1 Pippa is sired by Solpoll 1 Kentucky Kid, a Panmure 1 Henry son. Carrowboy 1 Perfect won the senior bull class before being tapped out as male champion and reserve breed champion.

There were big smiles all around the ring for Donald Beatty and his grandchildren when their 15-month-old bull Solpoll 1 Cherokee took the reserve male champion and overall junior champion honours, also winning the biggest bull class of the day with 13 bulls forward. Bought privately from Solpoll at the beginning of the year, Cherokee is sired by Rempstone 1 Worldwide, a bull purchased privately by the McMordies at 11 months old for £10,000, and his dam Shancorpoll 1 Oll1 Uakea was champion at Tullamore Show in 2022 and female champion at Balmoral Show 2023.

It was some day for this stand-out dam, as Shancorpoll 1 Oll1 Uakea  not only bred Cherokee but is also the mother to the reserve junior champion Solpoll 1 Eunice C23, breeding both junior champions. An end-of-March 2025-born heifer, winning the largest class of the day with a total of 19 heifers forward and a maternal sister to Cherokee, Eunice is sired by Solpoll 1 Dynamite, three-time Balmoral Show champion.

Solpoll breeding shone throughout the winners at this year’s show, and the McMordies had plenty of their own successes in the breed classes as well as the interbreed competitions. They came away with the reserve beef interbreed performance heifer champion and reserve female champion with Solpoll 1 Dainty C9. December 2024-born and another Rempstone 1 Worldwide daughter, Dainty C9 is no stranger to the shows and was reserve female champion at the NIHBA Calf Show at Dungannon in November 2025.

Solpoll bulls placed 1st, 2nd and 3rd in the bull born on or after 1 January 2025 class, the largest bull class of the day with 13 bulls forward. In second place behind Solpoll 1 Cherokee was Solpoll 1 Casino. Casino’s dam is Solpoll 1 Amber R5, a daughter of Gouldingpoll 1 Duchess 591, who was Miss World Champion of Europe 2016 and national champion at Tullamore Show as a first-calver with calf at foot in 2016. She has bred many notable females and bulls such as Coley 1 Vincent, joint bull of the year in 2023. Casino is sired by Solpoll 1 Ace, who went on to sell to Rempstone Herefords as a two-year-old stock bull and is in the top 1 per cent of the breed for 200, 400 and 600 day weights. Casino had won reserve overall and junior male champion at the NIHBA Calf Show held at Dungannon in November 2025.

Following behind Casino and then going on to be overall beef interbreed performance bull champion was January 2025-born Solpoll 1 Cowboy. Impressing interbreed judge Robin Irvine, Cowboy is a Fabb 1 Top Prize son whose maternal brother is Fabb 1 Northern Star and is out of Solpoll 1 Dainty P7.

Solitude 1 Helen B233, exhibited by Andrew McMordie, was the winner in the class of heifers born on or after 1 January 2024 and on or before 30 June 2024, in calf or with calf at foot. Another strong class of seven heifers forward, Helen is a March 2024-born Solpoll 1 Promoter daughter, from an embryo imported from Canada. Promoter is the sire of Solpoll 1 Trailblazer, joint bull of the year 2023, who sold for 10,000gns. Her dam Solpoll 1 Helen R484 is a Moeskaer Upgrade daughter.

Lusky 1 Cornelius, exhibited by John Gill, won the bull class born on or after 1 April 2024 and on or before 31 December 2024. A July 2024-born bull, Cornelius came out on top against four other entries. Being homebred, he is sired by Lusky 1 Van Dyke, a Peartree 1 Gordon son, and out of Lusky 1 Wanda.

The champion pair came from exhibitor Alan Shaw, Benburb Herefords, with his two Benburb 1 Alan heifers, Benburb 1 Beauty and Benburb 1 Alison 2nd. Beauty is a June 2024-born heifer and Alison 2nd a July 2024-born heifer.

Champion group of three came from the McMordie family with yearling bull Solpoll 1 Casino, Solpoll 1 Dainty C9 and Solpoll 1 Eunice C23.

The show marked a strong start to the 2026 season, and the Herefords on display were a real credit to the exhibitors. Congratulations to all of the breeders and stockmen on an outstanding showcase.
