With the highest number of Hereford entries forward at the event since before the pandemic, exhibitors put on an exceptional display of cattle to celebrate the 40th National Hereford Show in style. Held at Tenbury Wells on Saturday 1 August, the breed classes were judged by Mr Nigel Heatrick of the Glaslough herd, Co. Monaghan, Ireland, who awarded the Clive Parker Memorial Trophy for Supreme Champion Hereford to Messrs T & D Harrison, Northumberland, for their homebred 2022-born cow Moralee Curly CI288.

Described by the judge as “a very well-balanced cow that caught my eye as soon as she entered the ring”, Moralee Curly CI288 advances her already esteemed show career, having previously been crowned the HCS Horned Female of the Year as a heifer in both 2023 and 2024. Mr Heatrick went on to say of his champion: “She had a lovely udder and was doing her job well rearing her calf. She showed a lot of breed character which is something that I like in my cattle and is a worthy champion in my eyes.” This cow’s dam Auckvale Curly 1831S was originally purchased from breeders W & R Kemp & Sons, topping the 2020 Designer Genes Sale at 10,000gns and breaking the European record price for a horned Hereford female.

The heifer calf shown at foot to the Supreme Champion was Moralee Curly FF422, born in January 2026 and also winning the class for heifer calves born on or after 1 December 2025 in her own right, this smart young heifer is sired by the Harrisons’ 2025 National Hereford Show Male Champion and HCS Horned Bull of the Year, Bawnlea Fighter Fury.

The Pulham herd of PRJ & LR Vincent, Norfolk, collected a number of significant wins throughout the day, topped off with the Reserve Supreme Championship and the T E Smart Perpetual Challenge Cup for Grand Male Champion with their homebred September-born bull calf Pulham Dynamo. Sired by Irish import Gageboro Alfred EX92 and out of Pulham Blossom 29th VG88, this calf captured the judge’s attention as “a promising young bull that should have a great future in front of him. He had great power, bone, and presence in the ring. A well-muscled bull with breed character, and a well-deserved Male Champion.”

Further wins for the Pulham herd’s team of homebred calves came in both the group of three and pairs classes, as well as winning the Junior Male Champion and Reserve, and the Reserve Junior Female Championship, but a great day was made even more special when the farm’s stockperson Trish Stokes won the Dendor Award for Champion Young Handler. Judged by Miss Emma Dexter, Leicestershire, Trish took first place in the section for handlers aged 19 to 26, whilst Jemima R. won the class for 14- to 18-year-olds, and Oscar M. took the top prize for handlers under 14 years of age.

Back in the breed classes, the Reserve Grand Male Champion and winner of the Morris Corfield Yarwood Perpetual Cup for Intermediate Male Champion was Dieulacresse Chester, bred and exhibited by Messrs Spooner, Staffordshire. Mr Heatrick said: “This bull stood top of one of the strongest classes of the day for his correctness throughout, freedom of movement and natural muscle.” Born in May 2025, this impressive young bull is sired by the jointly owned Knockmountagh Rebel 2 bred by E & J McKiernan, property of the Spooner family and EL Lewis & Son.

Reserve Intermediate Male Champion went to Boycefield Casper, an April 2025-born son of previous National Hereford Show Junior Male Champion Boycefield Wrangler, bred and exhibited by JW Lewis, Dilwyn.

Winning the Reserve Grand Female Championship and the Morris Powell Memorial Trophy for Junior Female Champion was the September-born heifer calf Free Town Bequest 4th, bred and exhibited by RA Bradstock & Partners, Tarrington. Sired by Boycefield Stormzy, the two-time winner of the HCBA award for the Best Stock Bull & Progeny, this calf was lauded by judge Mr Heatrick as “a very promising young heifer that carried herself well around the ring. She showed good bone and power, yet retained her feminine look, and should develop into a great breeding cow in the future.”

The Bradstock family also took home the Charles Mackaness Perpetual Cup for the Senior Male Champion with another Boycefield Stormzy-sired animal, the October 2023-born bull Free Town Broadside. Standing in reserve was Deanery Flowrider from RP & NH Birchall, Staffordshire, a February 2024-born bull by Free Town Tiger and out of Free Town Peace 45th.

There was superb competition at the top of the tremendous class of ten heifers born January to August 2025, with the eventual winner being HighHouse Amy C30 from JR & HM Whitlow, Worcester. Sired by Haven Voltage and out of Drumatee Amy 523, the Whitlows’ heifer pipped the second-placed Haven Skylark 13th from EL Lewis & Son, Dilwyn, before the two were tapped forward again as Intermediate Female Champion and Reserve respectively.

Commenting on his day’s judging, Nigel Heatrick said: “I would like to thank the National Hereford Club for asking me to judge the 2026 National Hereford Show. It was a real honour for me to be asked and a job I thoroughly enjoyed. It was a fantastic turnout of quality Hereford cattle which were a real credit to the exhibitors, and thank you to everyone for your hospitality.”

The Club owes a great deal to its team of organisers who, alongside the Tenbury Agricultural Society, bring this event together every year as an excellent showcase of horned Hereford cattle. In its 40th year, the National Hereford Show celebrated those cattle, their breeders and exhibitors, judges and stewards, spectators and international visitors, who all contributed to making the show a success! Next year’s show will be held on Saturday 7 August 2027.

Taking the Overall Breed Championship and Reserve Interbreed Championship at the Scottish National Hereford Show, Dumfries, on Saturday 1 August was Coley 1 Malan from Miss A Jackson-Carr. It was the second time reigning champion for Miss A. Jackson-Carr & family in Scotland this year, with Coley 1 Malan 697 and her calf JC 1 Del Boy tapped out by judge Mr Phil Massey as Overall Breed Champion at the Scottish National. Coming up to Dumfries all the way from Sheffield, Coley 1 Malan 697 already enjoyed success in Scotland this year when she took the Breed Championship at the Royal Highland Show under judge Miss Non Thorne.

Coley 1 Malan 697 is an August 2023-born, first-calved heifer with JC 1 Del Boy at foot, a February born bull calf sired by Coley 1 Vincent. Malan is a Romany 1 Distiller daughter and her dam a Danish import, Kammerherre Malan. No stranger to the show ring all over the UK this year, Malan has also taken the top honours at the Great Yorkshire and Royal Highland shows and was Female Champion at Shropshire County and Royal Lancashire Shows.

Reserve Breed Champion and Junior Female Champion was RM 1 Starlet exhibited by Miss Emma Hodge. Starlet is a January 2025-born heifer sired by Gouldingpoll 1 Duncan and was the calf at foot of last year’s National Poll Show Champion Pulham 1 Starlet 11th. A heifer that’s enjoyed much success already having been Reserve Breed Champion at the Great Yorkshire Show.

Maxwell 1 Crack-a-Lackin was awarded the Overall Male Championship and Senior Male Champion, exhibited by Miss Cara Doggett. Crack-a-Lackin is an October 2024 born bull sired by Coley 1 Weidermann, a Solbakkens Patrick son, and his is dam Coley 1 Mink 634, a Gouldingpoll 1 Stockman daughter who herself enjoyed a successful show career as a yearling and two-year-old heifer. Crack-a-Lackin recently took the Overall Male Championship at The Great Yorkshire Show, judged by Mr James Ludgate and Breed Champion at the Border Union Show.

Taking the Reserve Male Championship and Reserve Senior Male was Solpoll 1 Boomer from Mr J Hodge. Boomer is a March 2023 born bull sired by Boomer Birches bred Sky High 1 Take-a-Chance and is a maternal brother to the prolific Solpoll 1 Vanquish with his dam being Solpoll 1 Starlet L3. Solpoll 1 Boomer was purchased from the McMordies 70th Anniversary Celebration Sale for 7,000gns.

Junior Male Champion went to Spartan 1 Caretaker, exhibited by SC & GL Hartwright. Winning the ‘bull born between 1 March 2025 and 31 July 2025’ class against his stable mate Spartan 1 Carlisle, Caretaker came out on top in the junior male lineup. Caretaker is a Rempstone 1 Waspy son and out of Englefield 1 Marys Gem 11th, a Dorepoll 1 499 Keystone daughter.

JC 1 Del Boy had a fantastic show taking the Reserve Junior Male Championship in his own right at just six months old and winning Overall Breed Champion on his dam Coley 1 Malan 697. Del Boy is a February-born calf, sired by the 2023 joint Bull of the Year Coley 1 Vincent.

Taking the Reserve Junior Female Championship was Back O Hill 1 Kylie, exhibited by Gordon Brown. Back O Hill 1 Kylie is an October 2025-born heifer and won the heifer born after 1 August 2025 class. Sired by Panmure 1 Nugget, a Romany 1 Distiller son, and out of the renowned Moralee 1 Kylie family with her dam being Moralee 1 Kylie PR302.

Hean 1 Eira 402 exhibited by Brenda Wear took the Reserve Senior Female Championship. Eira is a March 2024-born heifer sired by Hean 1 Takoda 008, a Solpoll 1 Kentucky Kid son and out of Hean 1 Eira 854, a Studdolph 1 Topper daughter.

Winning the pairs class was Mr J Hodge, Fellowhills Herefords, with Fellowhills 1 FR Echo, a five-year-old cow sired by Fabb 1 Royce with her March-born bull calf Fellowhills 1 Durham at foot, and Solpoll 1 Boomer.

Congratulations to all of the young Hereford breeders and stock people who took part in the Young Handlers competition, also judged by Mr Phil Massey, where Miss A. Jackson-Carr won first prize in the Junior section 15 and under, and Cara Doggett won first prize in the Senior Young Handlers class aged 16-26.

Speaking with our judge Phil Massey, he said: “I thoroughly enjoyed my day judging the cattle put in front of me. My champion had a lovely balance of femininity and great productivity in rearing a very impressive young calf. She has plenty of volume, a super udder and great locomotion. My reserve champion was a very powerful heifer, full through her top all the way to her hind quarters, she is thick throughout without being overdone. Both my champion and reserve had great breed characteristics and plenty of style. Overall, there were some very strong classes, particularly in the female section. I’d like to thank the SHBA for inviting me to judge.”

With a packed ringside and classes streamed live from the Royal Welsh Showground at Llanelwedd on Monday 20 July, all eyes were on the Hereford Breed Championship as decided by judge Mr Colin Soutter, Leicestershire. Winning the overall top spot was senior bull Santa Maria 1 Alcatraz, exhibited by S & H O’Kane. Colin said: “I was delighted to award my Overall Championship to the Male Champion Santa Maria 1 Alcatraz, a powerful, big-framed bull that demanded your attention from the moment he entered the ring. His presence was exceptional, carrying himself with real style and confidence. He combined tremendous stature with impressive volume and capacity.”

Originally secured as a calf at foot to his dam Dendor 1 Greta 29th from the Santa Maria herd dispersal of Mr T Vasami in 2023, and by the Irish AI sire Goudingpoll 1 Stockman, three-year-old Alcatraz takes this prominent win for owners Steven and Helen O’Kane of Keadyview Livestock, Newtown, Powys.

Picking up a number of breed and interbreed awards at the show was the Reserve Overall Champion Dendor 1 Cruzcampo from DE, ED & AL Jones, Caersws. Described by the judge as having “real nice lines and presence”, Colin also commented that “this bull just lacked the maturity [of the senior male] but had loads of character and style.” Born in March 2025, this young bull is sired by Solpoll 1 Vanquish and out of Dendor 1 Echo 36th EX90.

First taking home the Dendor Perpetual Challenge Trophy for Junior Male Champion and picking up both the Reserve Male and Reserve Breed Championships in the Hereford classes, Cruzcampo then went on to win both the Elite Junior Bull Championship on Tuesday as judged by Mr Andrew Hodge, Berwickshire, followed by the Native and Reserve Overall Junior Bull Interbreed on Thursday, judged by Mr Geoffrey Rodgers, Co Down.

The Female Championship in the Hereford section was awarded to Bowendu 1 Jennefer 2nd, owned by first-time Royal Welsh Show exhibitor Mr Lloyd Williams of Wilcourt Herefords, Bridgend. Bred by Bowen Farms, Mid Glamorgan, this January 2025-born heifer is sired by Havenfield 1 Wilf and out of Bowendu 1 Little Mo. Judge Colin Soutter commented: “As soon as [this heifer] walked into to the ring she said, ‘look at me’, and she paraded around with style and presence. This heifer has size and width with a lovely dark coat and has the future to become a good cow.”

The awards for newcomers Wilcourt Herefords didn’t end there though, as their two heifer entries – Bowendu 1 Jennefer 2nd and Bowendu 1 Ruby 11th – teamed up with young bull Keadyview 1 Casino from S & H O’Kane to take the RWAS Native Breed Team of Three Championship on Thursday under judge Mr Daniel Rowbottom, Strathardle.

Back to the Hereford section on Monday, the Reserve Female Championship went to the homebred October 2022-born cow Moralee Curly CI288 from Tom & Diane Harrison, Northumberland. Described by the judge as “a good working cow with a great bag of milk”, he also said: “she is thick, well-fleshed, and doing her heifer calf very well.” Moralee Curly CI288 was awarded the HCS Horned Female of the Year trophy as a heifer in both 2023 and 2024, and is an ET daughter of the renowned AI sire Parkhill Pompeii, and dam Auckvale Curly 1831S by Auckvale King-Maker.

On the conclusion of his day’s judging in the Hereford section, judge Mr Colin Soutter said: “The quality of cattle on display were a credit to every breeder. The top end was strong, but it’s so good to see the bottom ones keep getting better. As breeders we need to keep improving and competing with the other breeds, and the exhibitors at the Royal Welsh put on a fantastic display of cattle to promote our breed. Thank you to every breeder that exhibited cattle in front of me and thanks to the Royal Welsh Agricultural Society for asking me to judge.”

Closing out the Great Yorkshire Show in style on Friday 17 July, the Hereford breed was awarded one of the most prestigious prizes on the UK show circuit. Recently renamed to honour the late Margaret Chapman, a highly respected former chief cattle steward and Yorkshire Agricultural Society president, the Margaret Chapman Beef Pairs competition – formerly the Blythewood Pairs – was won by the Hereford team of RM 1 Blade from Miss E Hodge, Berwickshire, and Spartan 1 Victoria’s Secret from SC & GL Hartwright, Oxfordshire, as judged by Mr David Benson, Kelso.

In the breed classes on Tuesday, a superb morning’s Hereford competition was summed up by the judge Mr James Ludgate, Thame, as “a show of tremendous cattle, full of quality classes, and plenty of them as well”, as he commented after making his final championship decisions. Rising to the very top was the calved heifer Coley 1 Malan 697 from Miss A Jackson-Carr, Sheffield, shown with her February 2025-born bull calf JC 1 Del Boy at foot. Praised by the judge for outstanding milkiness and depth of body as a first-calved heifer, Coley 1 Malan 697 is sired by Romany 1 Distiller and out of Danish import Kammerherre Malan.

13-year-old Miss A. Jackson-Carr achieved even more success on the final day of the show, first winning a tremendously competitive class of young handlers in her age group, followed by the overall young handlers’ championship, with prizes presented by Clarkson’s Farm star Harriet Cowan.

The Reserve Breed Championship went to RM 1 Starlet from Miss E Hodge, Berwickshire, having won the biggest class of the day of ten heifers born between 1 January and 31 March 2025, and the overall Junior Championship. Shown in 2025 as a calf at foot to that year’s National Poll Show Breed Champion Pulham 1 Starlet 11th and sired by Gouldingpoll 1 Duncan, this heifer continues to prove the quality of her line as a champion in her own right.

In the male section, it was the October 2024-born bull Maxwell 1 Crack-a-Lackin’ from Cara Doggett, Lanarkshire, which claimed the Male Championship having first won a highly competitive class of young bulls. Sired by Coley 1 Weidermann and out of Coley 1 Mink 634, a previous class winner herself at the Great Yorkshire Show back in 2024, this young bull displayed the traits Mr Ludgate was looking for: “Structure, soundness, and balance, with that added power and muscle to be able to produce those proper pedigree calves, and meat calves going on throughout the journey.”

The Reserve Male Championship went to Coley 1 Centurion from Yorkshire-based breeder Miss H Whittaker, Halifax, adding another prize to a string of recent good results for this bull at the Shropshire, Royal Highland, Royal Norfolk, and Royal Lancashire shows. Coley 1 Centurion is sired by Gouldingpoll 1 Gold Spice, and out of Gouldingpoll 1 Duchess 916.

Further successes on the day came for Tom & Diane Harrison, Northumberland, whose young team of homebred cattle took wins in both the exhibitor-owned pairs and group of three classes, and their January 2025-born heifer Moralee 1 Ishbel PR396 – sired by Moralee 1 RHS Prince – also won the Reserve Junior Championship.

Dendor 1 Cruzcampo from DE, ED & AL Jones, Powys, came out on top at the Royal Lancashire Show on Saturday 4 July, securing the Overall Breed Championship and Reserve Native Interbreed Championship. A March 2025-born bull, Cruzcampo is sired by the herd’s stock bull Solpoll 1 Vanquish, who has sired the last two Agri Expo Supreme Champions and the last two Junior Champions at the National Poll Show. His dam is Dendor 1 Echo 36th, a Bakgard 1 Keno daughter who was Reserve Female Champion at Shrewsbury Calf Show in 2019. Cruzcampo is no stranger to winning championships this year, recently winning the Reserve Native Junior Interbreed title at the Royal Three Counties Show, Reserve Male Champion at Shropshire County Show and Junior Male Champion at Shrewsbury Calf Show in 2025.

Taking home the Reserve Breed Championship was last week’s Royal Norfolk Show Interbreed Champion Coley 1 Centurion, exhibited by Miss Heather Whittaker. Coley 1 Centurion, a December 2024-born bull, is sired by Gouldingpoll 1 Goldspice and out of Gouldingpoll 1 Duchess 916, the Female Champion at the Royal Highland Show in 2022. Centurion has had a flying year, also picking up Breed Champion and Reserve Interbreed Champion at Shropshire County Show and Reserve Breed Champion at the Royal Highland Show.

Judge Mr Joe Clark commented saying: “It was incredibly hard to split the two bulls. Both bulls are very modern and have the ability to take the breed forward in the right direction. My Overall Champion is so correct and very difficult to fault, has great balance on the move, full of character and style. My Reserve Champion is a bull people need to see for his pure power, such width and muscle. He is very impressive. Taking nothing away from the exceptional standard of females on the day, these two bulls really impressed me, and I look forward to the breed developing more bulls like this in the future.”

The Female Championship went to this year’s Royal Highland Show Champion Coley 1 Malan, exhibited by Miss Abbie Jackson Carr. Malan is an August 2023-born heifer sired by Romany 1 Distiller and out of Danish cow Kammerherre Malan, and is shown with her first calf JC 1 Del Boy at foot, born in February 2026 by Coley 1 Vincent, joint HCS Bull of the Year in 2023 and former Royal Highland Show Champion.

Coley 1 Mink 751 took the Reserve Female Championship for exhibitor and breeder Miss Heather Whittaker. A January 2025-born heifer, Mink is sired by a ‘blast from the past’ bull Aqua Hollow Talent 24K, a Canadian import born in 1978 and out of Frenchstone P. 1 Eve, a Solpoll 1 Dynamite daughter. Mink won the class for heifers born on or after 1st January 2025, beating six other entries.

The winner of the ‘heifer born in 2024’ class came from S Taylor & D Marsh with Taymar 1 Stella 5th, an October 2024-born heifer. Stella is sired by Holmefold 1 Rocco, a homozygous polled bull sired by Hoghton View 1 Kid Rock, a Dendor 1 Kohinoor son that was Overall Champion at the Shrewsbury Calf Show in 2022. Taymar 1 Stella 5th’s dam is Taymar 1 Stella, a Wirruna Katnook K74 daughter. Stella won against six other entries.

A special mention must go to Myerscough College who had a total of eight entries forward, five of which were all first-calved heifers with calves at foot in the ‘heifer born in 2024’ class. Well done on a great display of Hereford cattle.

The champion pair from the same exhibitor was won by Liam Jackson Carr with JC 1 Marigold 2nd, a March 2025-born heifer, and JC 1 Casino, an April 2025-born bull. Both animals are sired by Coley 1 Vincent.

The Hereford breed put forward a team into the Interbreed team of four competition, placing third overall with JC 1 Marigold, Taymar 1 Stella 5th, Dendor 1 Cruzcampo and Coley 1 Centurion. Big congratulations also go to young breeder Abbie Jackson Carr on winning Champion Young Handler.

Bringing home prestigious wins for the Hereford breed at the Royal Norfolk Show on 24 & 25 June was the December 2024-born bull Coley 1 Centurion, bred and exhibited by Miss Heather Whittaker, Halifax. Having first risen to the top of the Hereford section under breed judge Mrs Diane Harrison, Northumberland, Centurion went on to win both the native and overall titles in the Beef Supreme Championship judged by Mr John Elliott Sr., Berwickshire.

This success marked the second set of interbreed honours for Coley 1 Centurion so far this year and was not only hotly contested due to high temperatures at the show, but also the number and quality forward across several breeds, with national shows held at the event having brought together plenty of serious competition. Breed class judge Mrs Diane Harrison of Moralee Herefords, Stocksfield, summarised her choice for the breed championship by saying of the bull: “when he came into the ring he walked well, is well put together and very correct with a lovely rear end, good on the plates with a lovely colour and head. It was a tough decision for champion, but at the end of the day in the final seconds before the tap, he stood there like a king.”

The reserve breed championship went to the winner of a particularly strong class of cows, the 2020-born Pepperstock 1 Molly V715 from Jim Speirs, Luton, selected by the judge for the correctness through her top line and for her calf at foot, which just gave her the advantage at the top of the cow class, which Diane described as being tough to judge with so many outstanding entries down the line. The entirely homebred Molly V715 is sired by Pepperstock 1 Rebellious EX95 and out of Pepperstock 1 Molly S511 and was shown with her 9-month-old heifer calf Pepperstock 1 Molly D1200 at foot, the calf also picking up a second prize in her own right in the youngest heifer class.

Picking up a string of prizes were local breeders PRJ & LR Vincent, Diss, whose homebred heifer Pulham 1 Tiara 14th was pulled forward as both the junior champion and reserve female champion, having won a hugely competitive class of ten heifers all born between January and March 2025. This heifer – sired by Solitude 1 Vantastic EX95 and out of Pulham Tiara 6th EX93 – also picked up the Norfolk Special for the best animal bred and exhibited by a breeder within the county of Norfolk.

The reserve junior and reserve male championships went to the Benacre Company’s Benacre 3 Cassius Clay, a March 2025-born son of Coley 1 Ariel and out of Ashdale 3 Queen 799, this result adding to a successful show season so far for this young bull.

Following the judging, the Midlands and East Anglia Hereford Breeders’ Association hosted a reception on their stand featuring drinks sponsored by the Vincent family, and Hereford beef rolls supplied by Tony Perkins Butchers based in Attleborough, whose beef is sourced direct from MEAHBA members Clive and Paula Bidmead of Rockland Herefords near Norwich. Thanks go to HCS General Manager Seth Wareing, HCS President Caroline Davies, MEAHBA member Julie Reid, and MEAHBA Secretary Peter Moyes for operating the breed stand across the two days of the show, and to the many members who attended and brought forward a superb lineup of cattle.

At the Royal Cheshire County Show held at Knutsford on Tuesday 16 & Wednesday 17 June, it was the 2021-born cow Hallwood 1 Lady Jewel from Messrs R & RI Shaw, Ledsham, which topped the Hereford section under judge Mr D J Deaville, Derbyshire, before going on to be tapped forward as the Reserve Native Interbreed Champion, as well as the Reserve Exhibitor-bred Interbreed Champion as judged by Ms M Cormack, Shropshire.

Hallwood 1 Lady Jewel, a homebred offering from the Shaw’s long-established herd, is a daughter of the prolific AI sire Fabb 1 Northern Star and was shown with her November 2025-born bull calf Hallwood 1 Duke-of-Destiny at foot, sired by Hallwood 1 Allspice.

The reserve breed champion in the Hereford section was the senior heifer class winner Mairwen 1 Oyster Lass 4th from Mr Nigel Owens, Llanelli. Sired by Pepperstock 1 Watson and out of Rodbaston Oyster Lass 16th (X), this heifer was born in August 2024 and was also awarded the reserve female championship in the Hereford section.

In the bull standings, it was the April 2024-born Wythen 1 Blaze, bred and exhibited by Allen Massey of Wythenshawe Community Farm, Manchester, which rose to the top of the male championship just ahead of Simon Jones & Annika Harding’s junior bull Sandlow 1 Cajun Thunder, born in February 2025. The junior champion also came from the Wythen herd, the maiden heifer class winner Wythen 1 Chaos, born in April 2024 and sired by Maxstoke 1 Archie.

New breeders SJ & H Smith, Welshpool, saw success in the exhibitor-owned pairs class with two recent sale purchases: Pulham 1 Lucy 7th secured at the Designer Genes auction in December 2025, and Pepperstock 1 Blossom C1144 from the HCS Spring Show & Sale in February 2026.

Coley 1 Malan 697 reigned supreme with a fantastic showcase of quality Hereford cattle forward, and what a day it was for young Hereford breeder Miss Abbie Jackson-Carr with her calved heifer Coley 1 Malan 697 taking home the overall Breed Championship. Coley 1 Malan 697 is an August 2023-born, first-calved heifer with her February born bull calf JC 1 Del Boy at foot. Malan is sired by Romany 1 Distiller and out of an imported Danish cow, Kammerherre Malan. Malan and Del Boy impressed the judge Miss Non Thorne, Pembrokeshire, with Non commenting: “my champion is an incredibly sweet, very delicate heifer. She’s very light on her feet and shone throughout the day. I was drawn to her straight away when she was up against some real power in the cow and calf class.”

Taking the Reserve Breed Championship and overall Junior Championship was Coley 1 Centurion, exhibited by Miss H Whittaker. A December 2024-born Gouldingpoll 1 Goldspice embryo out of Gouldingpoll 1 Duchess 916 who was Female Champion herself at the Royal Highland Show in 2022. Centurions full brother was overall Champion and reached the top price at the Hereford Society Spring Show and Sale at Shrewsbury in April. Centurion has already had a Breed Championship title under his belt this year winning the overall Championship and Native Interbreed Championship at Shropshire County Show last month.

Taking the Reserve Male Championship and Reserve Junior Male was Normanton 1 Charlie Boy, exhibited by Mr J Hodge, Berwick-upon-Tweed. A September 2024-born bull sired by Cleland 1 Nelson, a Moeskaer Keno son, and out of Normanton 1 Griffola 10th, a Romany 1 Distiller daughter. Charlie Boy was bought for 7,000gns at the Shrewsbury Show and Sale in February and was Male Champion at Agri Expo and overall Champion at Shrewsbury Calf Show 2025.

Moralee 1 Pippa TE401 took the Reserve Female Championship along with Reserve Junior Champion and Junior Female Champion, bred and exhibited by T & D Harrison. Sired by Dendor 1 Tecwyn and her dam Moralee 1 Pippa RK281, a Moralee 1 Rebel Kicks daughter with Rebel Kicks taking the Overall Championship at the Royal Highland Show in 2021 along with being Champion of Europe. Moralee 1 Pippa TE401 at 3 months of age with her dam took the overall Breed Championship at the Highland Show in 2025. Her granddam Coley 1 Pippa 356 took the overall Breed Championship at the Royal Highland in 2017.

Winning the pairs class was T & D Harrison with the Reserve Female Champion Moralee 1 Pippa TE401 and Moralee 1 Ishbel PR396, a January 2025 born heifer sired by Moralee 1 RHS Prince KR R8.

Bringing home the Royal Three Counties Traditional Hereford breed championship for the very first time was Dorset-based breeder Mr Peter Davies, Weymouth, whose homebred 2-year-old bull South Buckland Major took the top spot under judge Mr Keith Siddorn, Chester, on Friday 12 June. Born in February 2024 and praised on the day by the judge for having excellent locomotion and body traits, Major’s pedigree features a variety of well-known animals of the past, being sired by the 1991-born AI sire Llandinabo Pop and out of homebred cow South Buckland Hope, an AI daughter of the well-regarded 1962 MMB bull Ffostill Brigadier. 

Standing in reserve was another February 2024-born animal, heifer Poolhullock Amorous 9th bred and exhibited by local breeder Mr Jeremy Helme, Hereford. Sired by Baytal Jeremy, this heifer impressed judge Mr Keith Siddorn with her functionality and overall appearance, with Keith commenting that she would be “the type of animal I’d very much like to put in my herd”.  

The reserve female championship was awarded to junior heifer class winner Albany Dowager 48th from Mr Leslie Cook, Cambridge. Sired by the prolific Boresisle Richmond EX94, this heifer is one of fewer than 50 remaining pedigree registered females of the original Dowager female family, as recorded in the most recent THBC census. The reserve male champion was another from the same breeder – Albany Odyssey born in August 2024 – also sired by Boresisle Richmond EX94 and out of Albany Oyster Girl 19th VG89. 

Success also continued at the show for the South Buckland herd on Sunday 14 June, when Mr Peter Davies’ South Buckland Major and South Buckland Hope were tapped forward as the Reserve Interbreed Pair in the RBST Watchlist Championship under judge Mr Bernard Llewellyn, Llandeilo. 

Congratulations are given to all of the exhibitors on bringing out a bumper entry for this year’s show, which judge Mr Keith Siddorn described as being “a great honour and privilege to have been asked [to judge], and I thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience. All of the cattle present were of great quality and were so very well presented; what a superb sight they were in the ring”. You can see more of Mr Siddorn’s post-judging comments in the video here.

It was some day for Young Hereford Breeder Nathaniel Shaw, taking the top spot at the NIHBA National Show with his homebred heifer Sessiagh 1 Billie Ray. Billie Ray started by winning the second class of the day, ‘Heifer born on or after 01/01/2024 and on or before 30/06/2024’, before being tapped out as Female Champion and then Overall Supreme Champion. Sessiagh 1 Billie Ray is a March 2024-born heifer, sired by Dendor 1 Kohinoor and out of Graceland 1 Nicola, a Fisher 1 Jubilee daughter. Billie Ray caught the eye of the judge, Mrs Caroline Davies, Herefordshire with Caroline commenting that “my champion heifer was oozing style and power and is an excellent example of the breed.”

Taking the Reserve Breed Championship was rising two-year-old bull Lusky 1 Cornelius, exhibited by Mr John Gill. Cornelius is a July 2024-born bull sired by Lusky 1 Van Dyke, a Peartree 1 Gordon son. Lusky 1 Cornelius won the ‘Bull born on or after 1st January 2024 and before 31st December 2024’ class, beating three other entries, before being tapped out as Male Champion and Reserve Breed Champion. Lusky 1 Cornelius is no stranger to the show ring this summer having won his class at both the 2026 Lurgan and Balmoral Shows.

Standing Reserve Male Champion to Cornelius and picking up the Junior Male Championship was the 2026 Balmoral Show Overall Junior Champion Solpoll 1 Cherokee, exhibited by Mr Donald Beatty. Cherokee is a 16-month-old Rempstone 1 Worldwide son which Donald purchased privately from the McMordie family earlier in the year. Cherokee’s dam is Shancorpoll 1 Oll1 Uakea, a Fabb 1 Northern Star daughter. Cherokee won the ‘Bull born on or after 01/01/2025 and on or before 31/08/2025’ class, beating four other entries.

Solpoll 1 Starlet D4 exhibited by J & W McMordie took the Reserve Female Championship, Junior Female Championship, Overall Junior Championship and Overall Calf Champion after winning the ‘Heifer born on or after 01/01/2025 and on or before 31/08/2025’ class. Starlet D4, a September 2025-born heifer is sired by the renowned Panmure 1 Henry and out of Solpoll 1 Starlet G13, a Solpoll 1 Dynamite daughter. Starlet D4 is a full sister to Solpoll 1 Nobility who sold to Rempstone and Solpoll 1 Starlet L3 who is the dam to Solpoll 1 Vanquish.

Taking the Reserve Female Junior Champion was Sommerville 1 Clementine exhibited by Heather King. An April born 2025, Fabb 1 Northern Star heifer out of Sommerville 1 Willow, a Gouldingpoll 1 Stockman daughter.

Reserve Calf Champion and Reserve Junior Male Champion was awarded to Richmount 1 Del Boy, a December 2025 Fisher 1 Jaguar son out of Richmount 1 Poppy, a Grousehallpoll 1 Premier daughter.

Winning the Progeny Pair, best pair by the same dam or sire, went to Ryan and Russell Kelly, with the boys also winning the best Group of Three.

The Champion Young Handler was Keziah Shaw and the Reserve went to Oscar Moore.

A total of 67 entries were forward, and the Herefords won the best display of cattle in the Grand Parade. Thanks to Caroline Davies for making the trip across the water and doing a fantastic job judging.
